Crush at Mount Meron – Stampede slur?

I’ve noticed some news outlets referring to last night’s tragedy as a ‘Stampede’ and it really bothers me. I think that ‘Stampede’ refers to animals. Is this a low key slur or just lazy journalism? Are they suggesting that the people who died are in some way sub-human? Crush is a much more appropriate terms.

The Hillsborough disaster in Sheffield is never referred to a Stampede, always a Crush.
