Can I compost religious books?

I am an unapologetic hoarder and occasional reader of books. As a result of that my home is filled with books. After my grandparents passed a few years ago I also inherited a lot of religious books, some are incredible, some I don’t have a use for and some are very badly damaged.

With regards to the damaged books, in the past I have always taken them to shul to be passed to the funeral group. They are then buried as is standard practice.

My wife just asked me, given that we can’t really take them to shul at the moment, if it is permitted to compost them? My instinct is probably not but I’m not sure why? Any opinions anybody? Does anybody know if this has been answered anywhere?
