B’nai Mitzvah ideas and thoughts?

Jewish parent here, but haven’t been a part of a Synagogue for many decades. Kids are at B’nai Mitzvah ages and I would like them to experience a ceremony of some kind, but honestly unsure what to do. And I know I should have figured this out a few years ago, but I didn’t so I’ve got what I’ve got.

Is it problematic to try to pull together a small ceremony of sorts in a couple months? Even possible? What are the crucial elements according to custom? Would it be better to skip it or at least not rush it and do it in a year or so?

Any examples of alternatives to traditional ceremonies? Really unique approaches? What would you do in my situation?
