Before the Shoah, was there as much emphasis on having lots of children?

In my experience the Shoah is often referenced as a reason it’s such a blessing when Jews have lots of healthy babies and are kind of breaking the curse of oppression and genocide of Jews. But I guess that could apply lots of times in history since Jews have been so persecuted. So I’m wondering what it was like before the 1900s, did Jews have a similar perspective about having lots of children and would any particular historical events be referenced as a reason why?
