Before matrilineal descent was codified in the Mishnah, do you think Judaism was always matrilineal before that?

There’s a theory that Judaism was always matrilineal. There’s another theory that Judaism was patrilineal before Mishnah. My unpopular theory is that before the codification, Judaism was a bilineal religion that both parents had to be Jewish for a child to be considered Jewish at birth.
