Asking for a bit of advice

My whole life I’ve heard, as I’m sure most of us have, jew jokes. They range in severity and intent, but I feel the over all message is the same, I’m different from them. In an attempt to fit in I make them at my own expense, and laugh along when they’re told. But today I heard one that struck a nerve, it wasn’t particularly egregious, but it wasn’t even really a joke. It was just “you’re greedy because you’re a jew” (I’m paraphrasing) I didn’t play along and he got upset, and started repeatedly asking me why it was okay for everyone else and not him. I just apologized and left the situation but now I’m still thinking about it. Should I have pushed it and tried to explain why his words were hurtful? Am I a hypocrite for wanting him to stop when I’ve told them about myself?
