Are “young people”’events just code for singles/matchmaking events?

I’m quite secular but have started attending some lightly religious “young professionals” (20-35 year old) events and it’s the most explicit experience I’ve had of people looking for a partner/hookup. Is this normal?

I’m a girl and guys walk up to me, say hi and immediately ask if I’m single. I’ve never had that before. Not even in clubs or bars.

If so, how do I reply: “yes I’m single but I don’t even know you so don’t take me continuing to converse as me being interested in you”? I don’t want to be rude (it take a lot to approach someone), but I also don’t want to “lead them on”.

These are not super religious events. People openly use their phones on Shabbat.

Thank you in advance!
