Advice for Visiting a Shiva Home

A good friend’s father passed away last weekend and I have been invited to come visit while they are sitting shiva (apologies if my wording is clumsy). I come from a Protestant Christian background and am not familiar with the etiquette for this custom, and really want to ensure I show respect to my friend and his family. I have read a few articles on etiquette and came away with these as the main points:

  • Wear modest but respectful clothing. Would chinos and a polo be ok? Or would dress slacks and a collared shirt be more appropriate?
  • Offer condolences, but not platitudes.
  • Bring food (and not flowers). Would this be appreciated, or would it seem weird?

Are these accurate? Any other suggestions? I really appreciate any guidance given.
