a (quite serious) religious question

What is a person who has committed one of the most serious sins supposed to do…like Chillul Hashem – I was watching a video of Rabbi Alon Anava and he describes how a person wearing a Kippah, with a beard basically presenting themselves as observant, but doing sins in public like going about lying and swearing, is guilty of this violation. A good example I can think of is the ultra-orthodox Jews who did crimes like dealing drugs. Supposedly only death is what can atone for this type of sin, but what are they supposed to do for the rest of their lives?
