A question for the Orthodox over a strange thing a Jew said to me.

I was eating lunch with a Jew a few days ago. He said he was not observant, but he was ‘spiritual’ and a monotheist. He said he believed in reincarnation.

I was confused as I had always thought that in Judaism the belief was that you died once, and existed in the afterlife, and then the Resurrection of the Dead came – but neither death nor the resurrection of the dead were “reincarnation”.

Having no idea what he meant by reincarnation (in my mind I was thinking Buddhist/Hindu style) I asked if that was something in Kabbalah and the Zohar.

He said yes.

But soon after that I had to go and didn’t ask much more.

I was wondering if that’s consistent with the views of Orthodox Jewry.
