A question about the Torah reading schedule

Hello, I visited my local synagogue and they mentioned the Torah gets read once a year and then there’s a ceremony where it gets rolled up to be reread for the next year. I’m interested in finding what parts of the Torah go with what holidays (and a general schedule of the pacing of the reading) but I can’t seem to find a simple explanation. My assumption is that each holiday ties into the Torah’s text for that time of year, but this may be wrong.

Thanks for helping me sort this out, ~A gentile interested in history and lunar calendars.
