A mizrahi with an ashkenazi surname?

My friend is mizrahi with mizrahi parents. His last name however is not commonly used among mizrahim. His surname is “levin” and to my knowledge as an ashkenazi (i know a few levins) it’s pretty ashkenazic? What could be the reason as to why they have that surname? Does it go in the family very far? Maybe a grandpa was ashkenazi?

I’m just curious and thought it would be weird to just ask such a question to him straight up. Levin is in a way a hebrew name but it’s not it’s original “levi” which many mizrahim also have as a surname.

Can someone help me out? Does anyone else have a non mizrahi surname and is it common? Did they change it to fit in?
